Bioware’s Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is a big hit.
Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG beta has proven a big success for developer Bioware. Publisher EA has revealed that over 2 million players participated in the event over the duration of the test, “The game itself has a huge pre-existing fan base,” said Eric Brown, EA’s chief financial officer, at the Global Media and Communications Conference. “We had about 2.4 million people register for the Star Wars fan site, over two million of which volunteered to do [beta] testing for free.”
The Old Republic beta drew around 750,000 unique users over the US Thanksgiving Weekend (24-27 November) and at its peak, around 250,000 were playing concurrently.
Star Wars: The Old Republic will launch on 20 December. EA is confident that it can profit from as ‘few’ as 500,000 subscribers and with over 2 million testers, that seems like an achievable figure.
